About Stockholm Stockholm is about 750 years old. The town started out as a defence of Lake Mälaren and the wealthy villages and towns around the very large lake. Anyone interested in learning more about Stockholm, and who has some time to spare, should explore the possibility of going on one of the walking guided tours that are on offer in several parts of the city. Stockholm consists of a number of islands and water is a very prominent feature in most parts of the town. The water is in fact safe to drink (not that we recommend you to try this!) and swim in. You are likely to see people fishing near the Parliament. There are many parks and green spaces in and around Stockholm. A favourite spot all year round for people living here is Djurgården. There are lovely places for walks as well as many museums here. The Stockholm Town website is filled with information that can be useful for visitors. Among other things there is a collection of links to the museums and attractions that are included in the Stockholm Card (the card is included for anyone booking through Destination Stockholm). The Stockholm Card can also be bought through the website or at outlets in Stockholm.

Favourite museums In no particular order... Vasa museum Tells the story of the proud battleship Vasa which sank on its maiden journey. The ship is more or less intact and inside the purposebuilt museum. target="pop" Vin & Sprithistoriska Here you can learn more about the swedish aquavit and the many flavours it comes in. You can listen to samples of many of the traditional drinking songs. There is a special exhibit about the Swedish government monopoly on selling alcohol as well. Aquaria A range of different water habitats and the species living in them can be found here. Nobel Museum This is where to go if you would like to find out more about Nobel, the Nobel prize and the many excellent laureates through the years. City Hall A guided tour around Stadshuset will give you an insight into one of the most important buildings in Stockholm, and see the grand hall where the Nobel festivities take place on December 10 each year. Skansen The large outdoor museum on Djurgården. Traditional houses from all over Sweden share the area with animals from near and afar. Toy museum The largest collection of Mickey Mouse toys and memorabilia as well as just about every kind of toy imagineable. Royal Armoury Louisa loved to go and have a look at the carriages when she was a kid, they come with sound effects! A wide range of clothes and a stuffed horse too. East Asian Museum A wide collection of Asian artefacts, mainly antiquities. In October there is a special exhibition about Manga. Butterflyhouse A magical place, especially on a cold and grey day. Filled with butterflies and birds. Nearby are the famous Copper Tents in Hagaparken, one of the largest green spaces in Stockholm.

Bra ställen att äta & fika Claes på hörnet Vetekatten Blå Dörren West |
Great places to eat & 'fika' Claes på hörnet Classic Swedish food at its best. The restaurant is the oldest in Stockholm. Expensive but if you are looking for excellent quality and beautiful surroundings you will not be disappointed. Vetekatten This is where to head for a real Swedish 'fika'. Fika is a cup of coffee (or tea) with kanelbulle (cinnamon bun) or a slice of cake to go with it. Fika is above all a social. Blå Dörren Another restaurant serving good Swedish food, often with a modern twist. Good value and great atmosphere. West All you can eat buffet with plenty of Asian food. Starters, mains and desserts are all included and you can have as many helpings as you like. The only place where I have found asparagus and sushi in a buffet of this kind. Favourite haunt for Stockholm people.
